Puerto Alegria: Season 3

Boat to Puerto Alegria, originally uploaded by katherinebruder.

It has been quite a busy 2 weeks since I landed in Lima in the beginning of June. After a few busy days in Lima, 4 trips to the airport within 5 days, and a very fast 48-hour Lima-Kimo-Lima trip, I hit the ground running with the busy volunteer season.

Last Thursday night I met a familiar team from North Carolina and headed north to the jungle – to the city of Iquitos and our Casa Girasoles home for abandoned boys named Puerto Alegria. You might remember this is the home I spent a considerable amount of time at during the 2009 and 2010 volunteer seasons. (It is the place about 30 minutes down the river from the city, with no electricity and lots of mosquitos… sound familiar?)

It is absolutely wonderful to be back with familiar faces. I was greeted with big smiles, told stories from the past 9 months, and welcomed back into the home with open arms – both literally and figuratively. The team and I spent the week playing games, doing art projects, swinging in hammocks, swimming in the river, sanding wood and mixing cement.

As I left the North Carolina group at the Iquitos airport this morning, I look forward to adventures and memories in store with the other teams that will be joining us over the next couple months.

Commissioning Sunday

Posted on Sunday, May 22, 2011 1 Comment

Today I was commissioned for my upcoming work in Peru during the services at First Presbyterian. It was a wonderful morning with prayer, many hugs and even more tears as the congregation stood behind me in support as I prepare to leave on June 8th.

Randy designed the cover of the worship bulletin and a special photograph insert with photos from my past trips to Peru.

Earlier this week, I received word from Latin America Mission clearing me to start the preparations for moving to Peru! Airline tickets have been purchased for Wednesday, June 8th and a few days later, I will greet my first work team and head up to the jungle!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be busy getting ready to move to South America. This means going to Miami to sign paperwork with LAM, two weddings, a short vacation with family, wrapping up various things in Dearborn, and figuring out exactly how to pack for a three-year move!

Even though I have been cleared to deploy to Peru, I am still just a few percentage points away from being fully supported. To be fully-supported, I am in need of $300 per month. If you have been waiting until I have a departure date to support my work, now is the time! Please fill out a pledge card, mail it to LAM and help me become fully supported.

A lot of changes are going to happen over the next few weeks and I am excited about each one!

Stay tuned for updates about a Commissioning Service at First Presbyterian, how to pack for three years, and other developments as I prepare to depart for Peru.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter.

It was such a beautiful day, my mom and I had to take advantage of a free afternoon, warm and sunny weather and the Tigers-White Sox game at Comerica Park. I’m a hundred percent sure it’s possible that baseball has absolutely nothing to do with Easter, but it was a beautiful afternoon and Tigers games are loads of fun!

Cabrera and Scherzer in the field.

After the game, which they won 3-0!
