Pampachay

PampachaySome good news from the Casa Girasoles home in Ica:

In May a group of volunteers from Telefonica, the Peruvian Telephone Company, asked Girasoles Ica to submit a socially relevant project to their first ever “Contest of Original Social Projects”.

Interestingly, Augusto, house parent to the boys already had an idea in mind; having the boys use recycled materials as instruments. The concept was eagerly accepted and once the telephone company signed on to help fund the project, Augusto and the boys began “band practice”. Old plastic buckets, tins, metal pipes, bottles, cardboard and wooden boxes would do just fine!

All 40 boys participated in the project led by Augusto – even down to the youngest, Sanchez, who is only 5 years old. The group successfully won the Ica area contest and went on to place among the top nine contestants nationwide, which qualified them for further funding and grants.

Thanks to the boys success and unprecedented corporate support, Girasoles Ica will now have a music teacher who will help them record “Pampachay” (Quechua for “overcoming difficulty”) a full length CD of their creative music! A first lot of 1000 CDs will be sold at S/10 each and the proceeds will be used to improve the boys’ educational experience in Ica.

Here you can see the cover to the debut CD and a group photo of Girasoles Ica with a work team from Dearborn, Michigan.

What a great offer for those that love to travel.

While surfing the web, I found this offer to design your own luggage tags from the European airline, KLM. I just ordered some with one of my photos on the back. It takes about 3 weeks for them to arrive.

(You can only order one set with the same information/name).

Have fun and happy travels!

For those of you familiar with the NOOMA videos by Rob Bell, this video might seem familiar. It was written & directed by my brother Randy for a youth service at our church. The actors in the video are all members of the youth group and are participating in preparing meals for the needy in Detroit, something they do every month.

Sunflower Petals

How does this not make you smile?

For those of you that don’t know, the Scripture Union boys in Peru are given the name girasoles, which is Spanish for sunflower. They live in the Casa Girasoles and are part of the Programa Girasoles. The idea behind the name Girasoles is that like a real sunflower follows the sun during the day, these boys will follow the Son throughout their lives. To those of us who live in a culture where calling a boy a flower name sounds silly, these boys take pride in their name.

Taken right here in Dearborn, Michigan in one of the Ford Motor Company fields.
