Communication

Posted on Sunday, May 29, 2011 Leave a Comment

One of the reasons I was a Communications major at Alma is because of my interest in new media and its benefits we enjoy.

New media has become a great way for people to stay in touch, especially for those living overseas. All of the services listed below are free for you to use and an easy way to follow what I am doing in Peru. Some might require you to have your own account to see my communication, but others like Flickr and Vimeo do not.

Flickr
Where all my photographs are hosted.

Vimeo
Similar to YouTube, just better. I’ll continue uploading videos to this site.

Skype
The epitome of Internet communication – video, voice and chat all in one free program. My Skype name is katebruder and Skype Number is 313-444-6585. This is a free and local call from your land-line or cell phone, which will be rerouted to my computer for voice calls. (If you do not already have Skype on your computer, you will need to sign up for a free account and download the program if you wish to video or voice chat.)

Twitter
Follow my tweets to see what I’m doing, where I am working and what is going on. This is the best way to see what is going on a daily basis. If you do not already have a Twitter username, join the conversation by signing up for an account here.

Facebook
The ultimate social networking site.

Blog
You can always stay connected here on my website, A Life in the World. If you would like to receive email updates when I post a new story, click here to sign up.

And of course, you can always reach me via email: katebruder (at) gmail . com.

I would also ask that you would use one or more of these methods of communication to stay in contact with me as I live and work in Peru. I definitely want to follow what you are doing and know what is going on in your life!

Commissioning Sunday

Posted on Sunday, May 22, 2011 1 Comment

Today I was commissioned for my upcoming work in Peru during the services at First Presbyterian. It was a wonderful morning with prayer, many hugs and even more tears as the congregation stood behind me in support as I prepare to leave on June 8th.

Randy designed the cover of the worship bulletin and a special photograph insert with photos from my past trips to Peru.

Martin & Ronal, originally uploaded by katherinebruder.

Earlier this week, I received word from Latin America Mission clearing me to start the preparations for moving to Peru! Airline tickets have been purchased for Wednesday, June 8th and a few days later, I will greet my first work team and head up to the jungle!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be busy getting ready to move to South America. This means going to Miami to sign paperwork with LAM, two weddings, a short vacation with family, wrapping up various things in Dearborn, and figuring out exactly how to pack for a three-year move!

Even though I have been cleared to deploy to Peru, I am still just a few percentage points away from being fully supported. To be fully-supported, I am in need of $300 per month. If you have been waiting until I have a departure date to support my work, now is the time! Please fill out a pledge card, mail it to LAM and help me become fully supported.

A lot of changes are going to happen over the next few weeks and I am excited about each one!

Stay tuned for updates about a Commissioning Service at First Presbyterian, how to pack for three years, and other developments as I prepare to depart for Peru.

Peru, Nebraska

Posted on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 Leave a Comment

Yesterday, Billy shared a very clever video with me about what happens when Peru brings its culture to the small town of Peru, Nebraska – population 569.

A team of famous and influential musicians, artists, chefs and athletes in their field, traveled to Nebraska to share the Peruvian culture with their fellow “Peruvians” and produced this 14-minute video of their week with the new ambassadors of Peru – eating ceviche, dancing huaynos, drinking pisco and many other things.

With English subtitles, those that have been to Peru before, will definitely resonate with and recognize what the residents of Peru, Nebraska experience during the week!

Enjoy.

* Now with English subtitles.

Happy Father’s Day, Billy! The legacy you are creating for Will and the example you show him daily of how to be a father and husband is our greatest blessing. We love you.
