Mistura 2011

How did we see a presidential candidate, the queen of anticuchos and a famous dessert chef all in one afternoon?

All this week, Lima is hosting the 4th annual food fair downtown at the Parque de la Exposición. Simply calling this a food fair is not enough – it is truly an international gastronomic party. Founded 4 years ago by a famous Peruvian chef, Gastón Acurio, in Mistura has become the largest food fair in Latin America. It’s not just a festival of food – but more of a party where Peruvians and foreigners from various regions gather together to celebrate the traditional Peruvian cuisine to reaffirm the Peruvian identity and celebrate it’s cultural diversity.

Over the centuries, food has been associated with fiesta. For local holidays and festivals, such as Inti Raymi in Cusco, and San Juan in Iquitos, Christmas, Easter and family celebrations (weddings, birthdays, christenings) dishes are prepared using the traditional techniques and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. This is the spirit that dominates Mistura.

The fair brings together farmers, producers, cooks, bakers, restaurants, cooking schools, food processing companies and everything in between. Divided into types of food and regions, three, four and five star restaurants and distributed throughout the park alongside food carts and street vendors. All of the participants have to be invited to participate, and are considered the best of the best. In addition, an area of the park is devoted to a grand market, where visitors have the opportunity to buy products directly from the farmer and sometimes, products that they would not be able to get locally.

Having a free day, Billy and I decided to take advantage of everything Mistura has to offer. We spent the better part of a day wandering around the park, sampling dishes from around the country of Peru, learning about the types of pisco and the 2,000+ types of potatoes grown here, and basically just trying as much as we possibly could. And, we even managed to run into a few famous types – Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a presidential candidate from the recent election, the Doña Grimanesa Vargas, the queen of anticuchos (she sells them on the street corner to hundreds and hundreds of people waiting each night), and Astrid Gutsche, the famous dessert chef.

Just a few of the 2,000+ varieties of potatoes that are native to Peru.

What a month!

My younger brother, Randy, was able to spend the month of August here in Peru with me. As I was heading back to my apartment after leaving him at the airport on Friday night, I was thinking about all the things we did during the 24 days he was here…

We spent a 11 days in the jungle at our home for abandoned boys, Puerto Alegria.

Last Day in Kusi

Jonathan

Yesterday was my last day in Kusi for the summer.

On Monday and Tuesday, the work team from Virigina wanted to host a VBS-like program for the Girasoles boys, children that attend the SU-operated school at Kusi and children from the nearby villages of Ongo and Aira. Both days the team prepared songs, games, dancing, a craft, story and skit to share with the children, which was both successful and lots of fun. On the second day, they ended the event with a big carnival in the main square of Kusi. There was face painting, crafts, games where the children spun around a baseball bat (which is quite funny for those watching) and where they had to match numbers on floating little yellow rubber duckies. They even had a beauty station with manicures for the mothers that came with their children. It was a great way to end the two days of events!

2 Days in Lima

World Cup, originally uploaded by katherinebruder.

After a week in the jungle at Puerto Alegria with my own team from Dearborn, we returned to Lima for a few days – back into the city, “back into civilization” as I heard one member of the team say. It was back to warm showers, soft mattresses, television, electricity, food choices and other people! To go from the little village of Puerto Alegria with its 100 or so residents (45 of which live at the SU home for abandoned boys) to a city of 8 million was quite a change.

We had originally planned on returning to Lima on the 5:50pm flight from Iquitos, but a few days earlier, I received word that our flight had been cancelled and we were rebooked to leave Iquitos at 11:30am. This cut our stay at the house by a few hours, but allowed us to spend a considerable amount of time in Miraflores, one of the nicest districts of Lima, which is something we have never been able to do in the 10 years the team has been coming to Peru.

Today, we spent the day doing the usual Lima things – tour of a church with catacombs, a walk through Lima’s downtown pedestrian street, a few hours wandering in the indian market, and the traditional pollo a la brasa dinner at Pardo’s. Unlike previous years where we have left dinner and proceeded directly to the airport or headed back to Kawai (another SU property and home for abandoned boys), we spent another night in a Miraflores hotel, before heading south to Ica the next morning.

In the photo above, Griffin and Brandon are enjoying the “World Cup Fan Fest” in the Plaza de Armas in downtown Lima.

The Amazing Race

Posted on Saturday, May 29, 2010 Leave a Comment

After an eventful journey from Detroit to Lima, I finally made it to a bed around 3am on Saturday morning.

My first flight from Detroit to Atlanta was slightly delayed, which left a very short layover in Atlanta. Thankfully, for me my second flight from Atlanta to Lima was going to be delayed because of some big weather problems in Atlanta. We were supposed to be taking off at 5pm, but did not end up leaving the ground until almost 7:30pm.

When I arrived in Lima, the plan was to be met by Billy Clark, my boss, at the airport and be taken to his house. Thankfully, I was able to quickly check my email before leaving the States and noticed a change in plans: I was to meet a taxi driver at the little café outside of customs/immigration who would take me to my final destination. He would have a letter for me with instructions for the next few days before I fly up to Iquitos for the summer. I felt like I was a contestant on The Amazing Race – just without the partner and challenges.

“Tonight when I arrive in Lima, a taxi driver will meet me with a letter with instructions for the next few days… This is so Amazing Race.”

I successfully met up with the taxi driver and after being delayed for so long, I finally made it to a bed around 3am. With all the excitement of being back in Peru, I just couldn’t fall asleep.

On Saturday afternoon, I met up with a group of high school seniors from Southlake Christian in North Carolina who were on their senior class trip. They had just returned from spending a week in Kusi with Rachel, a fellow SU worker and Billy. After trading emails back and forth with Rachel for the past few months, it was nice to finally meet her. And it is always nice to be in the same time zone as Billy!

So for the next few days I’ll be here in Lima. The plan is that I will fly up to Iquitos with Billy Clark on Tuesday morning to meet the new house parents and get settled into Puerto Alegria before my first team arrives.
