Beca 18

Posted on Friday, February 28, 2014 1 Comment

It’s just about the end of summer vacation here in Peru and almost every store is full of school supplies and big sales on notebooks, markers, crayons, and the such. As the majority of our Girasoles boys are preparing to return to elementary or high scholol in a week or so*, we wanted to tell you about an opportunity that four of our boys were given.

In 2012, the Peruvian government started a higher education scholarship program called Beca 18. There are quite a few different scholarship categories available for applicants like high grades, students living in the VRAEM (an area of Peru that still has low terrorist activity), members of the Peruvian military and students that live in albergues (childrens homes like our Casas Girasoles).

The Beca 18 scholarship is a great opportunity for any of its recipients and offers programs of study in both the university and institute (technical school) levels. The scholarship covers tuition, provides the student with a monthly stipend for housing, food and transportation, English classes, a new laptop, uniform for classes (like a suit if needed), private insurance and a few other things. It is a great opportunity for students who would not necessarily have access to higher education studies.

At the end of January, Billy and I were contacted by a few employees from Pronabec, the government body that manages the Beca 18 scholarships, to see if we had any boys in our homes that were eligible for the children’s home category. To apply for a university program, students need a minimum average of 15 out of 20 during their 5 years of high school study and for institute programs a minimum average of 13. Pronabec has a maximum 200 spots to fill within the children’s home category and when they contacted us on January 23rd, there were only 7 applicants and the deadline to apply was just two weeks later on February 7th.

Bowling

A few weeks ago, Kate and I had a chance to spend some time with Eloy, one of the graduates of Scripture Union’s Girasoles program. He is actually now working full time as one of the caregivers for the other boys for the home in Kusi where he grew up, but he was spending some time in Lima on vacation.

We had to opportunity to do something that was a first for all of us – go glo-bowling in Lima. We had a great time, and I even broke 100 points in a game for the first time ever (pretty sad, I know). We even started our third game with all strikes and we were pretty proud to be the only people in the entire bowling alley who were not using the bumpers! In the end, we came out tied. Kate, Eloy, and myself each won one game.

Last month we were blessed to be given a car!

IMG_0551

In November, we were contacted by the director of personnel from Latin America Mission asking if we would be interested in having a car. Another missionary family in Lima was leaving LAM and going to another mission group. They had a car that had to be returned to LAM and instead of looking to sell it, they offered to let us have it for free – all we had to pay for was the title change, which was just under 200 soles (about $75). For the past few years, Billy and I have relied on buses, taxis or our own two feet to get around the city of Lima. Neither of us saw a pressing need for us to have a car but knew that some day we would have to get one. Continue reading…

A Trip to the States

Posted on Monday, January 13, 2014 Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it’s already been a month since we returned from our last-minute trip to the US in November/December. Unfortunately we had some complicated technical issues with our website which delayed this post and resulted in rebuilding the website and creating a new design. If you’re reading this entry through an RSS reader or our email delivery, check out the new design at 12degreessouth.com. I promise we had this entry written earlier, we just couldn’t log in to post it… and we promise to be better at updating more often 🙂

Billy and I weren’t planning on being in the US at the end of last year since we’re still waiting for his Peruvian citizenship papers to come through. Unfortunately Scripture Union Peru is facing a large financial deficit for 2014 so we were asked to organize a trip to try to raise support for the organization and its ministries. Within a week of having the trip approved, we purchased tickets and were on our way to New York.

Merry Christmas!

Posted on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 Leave a Comment

As Kate and I take some time to reflect and give thanks to God on this Christmas Day for sending His Son as a perfect example and sacrifice for us, we also wanted to take some time to thank all of you and share a little bit about what God has been doing through our program for the deaf this Christmas season.

Last week the kids in our deaf program came together, and decided that they wanted to teach other Peruvians how to “sing” Silent Night in sign language. Together with a number of other volunteers they all came together in one of the busiest parks in Lima, and did just that. It was wonderful to see how passersby gathered around to learn the signs and to learn about the deaf community. It was a blessing for us and the rest of the SU staff to give the kids this opportunity to come along side them and show them that they do have a voice that is worth hearing and to continue to share God’s love with them.
