Zac

Posted on Monday, July 11, 2011 2 Comments

Due to technical difficulties with my beloved Zac the Mac (like it being accidentally dropped… definitely not good), things have been quite dormant here recently. Don’t worry, things are going just fine in Iquitos and at our Casa Girasoles Puerto Alegria, home for abandoned boys. Thankfully, I have a wonderful friend (once again, thank you!) who was able to get it fixed in Lima and all will be well soon.

Pending time in the city of Iquitos to turn my handwritten stories into text, accounts of adventures with another volunteer group from North Carolina, a visit from two Scottish school groups and a week in the city of Iquitos with quite a lovely Scottish team, will be posted soon. And of course, they will all include photos!

For quick semi-daily updates, be sure to follow me on Twitter or Facebook.

Stay tuned. Zac the Mac and I will be back online shortly with some lovely stories.

Lessons in Tikuna

Posted on Saturday, June 25, 2011 1 Comment

Despite the familiar faces at Puerto Alegria, there are 16 new boys at the home who all come from near the Peruvian-Colmbian-Brazilian border. These boys come from the villages near Caballococha and Cuchillococha and arrived to Puerto Alegria in May.

This has added another level of multiculturalism to the home because many of these boys did not learn Spanish as their first language – and a small handful barely speak it at all. These boys were raised speaking Tikuna (more about that here), which is a complicated native language. So when I translate game instructions or commentary before meals from Spanish to English for the volunteer teams and boys, a brave new Tikuna translates from Spanish to Tikuna for for the rest of the group.

As these new boys are slowly learning Spanish, they continue to communicate amongst themselves in Tikuna. Over the past few weeks, I have learned some basic phrases from some of the more vocal boys and have even learned the words to a song we sing in Spanish before meals here, “Demos Gracias” (We Give Thanks), and I have been welcomed into the fold with my own name in Tikuna – “Pa-ka” (which is pronounced, paa-kay). Here are two videos of one of the older Tikuna boys singing “Demos Gracias” in Tikuna and then again in Spanish.

Taxcü ni a cuega. (Ta-koo knee ah qu-eh-gaa) – What is your name?

Choxega ni a Kate. (Cho-ega knee ah Kate) – My name is Kate.

Puerto Alegria: Season 3

Boat to Puerto Alegria, originally uploaded by katherinebruder.

It has been quite a busy 2 weeks since I landed in Lima in the beginning of June. After a few busy days in Lima, 4 trips to the airport within 5 days, and a very fast 48-hour Lima-Kimo-Lima trip, I hit the ground running with the busy volunteer season.

Last Thursday night I met a familiar team from North Carolina and headed north to the jungle – to the city of Iquitos and our Casa Girasoles home for abandoned boys named Puerto Alegria. You might remember this is the home I spent a considerable amount of time at during the 2009 and 2010 volunteer seasons. (It is the place about 30 minutes down the river from the city, with no electricity and lots of mosquitos… sound familiar?)

It is absolutely wonderful to be back with familiar faces. I was greeted with big smiles, told stories from the past 9 months, and welcomed back into the home with open arms – both literally and figuratively. The team and I spent the week playing games, doing art projects, swinging in hammocks, swimming in the river, sanding wood and mixing cement.

As I left the North Carolina group at the Iquitos airport this morning, I look forward to adventures and memories in store with the other teams that will be joining us over the next couple months.

Detroit – Mexico City – Lima

Posted on Thursday, June 9, 2011 1 Comment

Yesterday could not have been any smoother. Despite being overly tired from lack of sleep the past few weeks, I experienced absolutely zero hiccups throughout the day – from leaving Detroit all the way through making it to bed that night. So, those few things I asked you to pray for yesterday (safe flights, no issues with luggage, easy entry into Peru)? Thank you.

Zero lines at the Delta International check-in counter and airport security made for a great start to the day. And if it couldn’t be better, my flight from Detroit to Mexico City was not full at all, so I didn’t have to sit next to anybody. Space on an airplane? Wonderful.

We arrived in Mexico City and navigated the immigration department (where I received a Mexican stamp in my passport – but it covers another one…), gathered my luggage and dropped it off at the AeroMexico baggage claim.

Three hours later, after a considerable amount of people watching, reading and just sitting around, I boarded the next flight, from Mexico City to Lima. Again, the plane was barely full and I didn’t have to sit directly next to anybody. And, where I was sitting the first 2 rows of the Coach cabin was called “AeroMexico Plus+”. Nobody directly next to me, slightly larger seat, nice headrest and lots of leg room? Perfect.

There were maybe 10 people sitting in front of me on the flight, so it made for an easy exit off the plane and a very quick stop in Immigration. My luggage came off the flight quickly and when I pushed the customs button, I got the green light.

For anybody that has been to Peru before, sometimes this last part of the trip – from when you land in Lima to getting in your transportation from the airport – can take a lot of time. You have to wait in line at Immigration, it takes a long time for your baggage to arrive, you get the red light at customs, and then you exit into the airport to a sea of people anxiously waiting for their loved ones, or taxi drivers constantly asking, “taxi? taxi?”.

I walked out from the restricted area into literally a sea of people all staring right at the door. My transportation from the airport to the apartment was a hired taxi driver that I had never met before. To find him, I was supposed to look for a sign with my name on it, among the dozens and dozens of other signs around the airport. Usually, this takes me a while. They are never standing near the front of the group, their sign is small with some creative spelling of my name, and I don’t know who I’m looking for. But not last night – Cesar was standing right in the front of the large group and unbelievably easy to find.

He helped me to his car and we were off into the streets of Lima.

And so the adventure begins.

Moving Day!

Posted on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 Leave a Comment

Today is the big day!

This morning, at 10:10 am my trip from Detroit to Lima will begin. I fly from Detroit to Mexico City (I’ve never done that before!), and then after a 3 hour layover, fly from Mexico City to Lima. After a long day of traveling, I should arrive in Lima at 11:30 pm – which will really be 12:30 am EST. It’s been a long 18 months preparing for this and I am excited to get started.

As you read this, would you pray for these things?
* Safe flights from Detroit to Lima
* No issues with checking luggage or bags possibly being overweight
* An easy entry into Peru

And yes, I wrote this last week and scheduled it to post today. 🙂
